Life Settlements: Dead or Alive?

The life settlement industry has had its share of challenges: bad press, a liquidity drought, increasing regulatory scrutiny, and dramatic changes to the mortality tables that put many portfolios under water. Despite all that, life settlements seem to be here to stay. Since many retirees will outlive their savings, there are a large number of policies that could be settled. As a non-correlated asset class life settlements may be smart alternatives to sometimes volatile capital markets and for long-term investors willing to accept somewhat lower returns, they may make good sense. How can the life insurance industry benefit from life settlements?
